SUMMARY:Rama Vaidyanathan + Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:Commissioned by Vancouver’s Mandala Arts and Culture\, Sannidhanam is a new work choreographed by the world-renowned Indian Bharatanatyam artist Rama Vaidyanathan. It is inspired by the significance of symbols in Indian philosophy\, using the precise grammar and lines of Bharatanatyam to depict a sacred geometry. Performed by eight dancers including Vaidyanathan\, this is an unmissable opportunity to experience the work of one of the most celebrated Bharatanatyam dancers of her generation. \n“Symbols hold a tremendous significance in Indian philosophy and many of them have become indelible tenets of knowledge and awakening. They appear to be the simplest\, but are potent with layers of possibilities. This work explores the significance of the square\, the circle and the triangle\, integrating them with ancient literature that use them as mediums to delineate spiritual concepts. SUMMARY:V’ni Dansi’s Louis Riel Métis Dancers
DESCRIPTION:The rhythms and images of the Métis spirit come alive through traditional and contemporary styles of Métis dance and music in Red River Special\, which combines the Red River Jig – the national dance of the Métis – with the Orange Blossom Special\, and square dances. Traditionally\, dancers would challenge themselves to perform up to 100 “fancy steps” during the Red River Jig and the company will build on that tradition with a crescendo of steps and “crooked” fiddle tunes. This joyful performance celebrates the best of the old and the new\, and is sure to get your toes tapping!

SUMMARY:Dance In Vancouver: Dumb Instrument Dance
DESCRIPTION:A triad of solos that are odes to the performers’ grandmothers\, featuring Ziyian Kwan\, Shion Skye Carter\, and Justin Calvadores. Each of these collaboratively created works counter historic erasure by highlighting the life stories of womxn of colour\, portrayed through the memories of their grandchildren. The solos are at times delightfully anecdotal and at other times epic in their reveal of dramas related to diaspora\, war and peace. DESCRIPTION:In Blue Space\, Kelly McInnes explores our intrinsic connection to water – the water that makes up our bodies and the world we inhabit. Full of startling imagery\, this deeply-felt solo explores tensions between the healing and the exploitation involved in our relationship to earth\, and remembers what we’re made of. \nMahaila Patterson-O’Brien’s choreography revolves around form and abstract gestures through the use of unison\, repetition\, and complex patterns\, while projections and sound reveal softer internal worlds. Danced by Eowynn Enquist and Isak Enquist\, Mid-Light: A Translucent Memory is a score-based re-imagining of a piece initially made for film and stage – an attempt to grasp an idea that is endlessly shifting and dissolving into new forms. \nFull schedule of DIV events
